There isn't a strong enough word or phrase to describe the destruction breast cancer causes. Everyone loves "boobies" and breast cancer's mission is to destroy them or worse - cause death. We, on the other hand, have a simple mission - make sure the topic of self breast exams is alive every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year. Know your body and notice changes because an early detection is a great way to take control of your own health. Reminding the women you love to do a regular self breast exam is a great way to be helpful.
We hope to provide information and tools that bring knowledge, awareness, and a little humor (a powerful healer) to this life and death situation which might be different from many other breast cancer awareness websites. Additionally, we will donate up to 50% of profits to charity - the more we sell the higher percentage we donate! We encourage you to compare that donation percentage to others who also do good work if that matters when you buy breast cancer products. We want to be significantly different than other companies selling breast cancer shirts by donating significant levels to charity or to recommend don’t buy our products, donate 100% of that money to charity. We truly want charity to win and not just give lip service to helping charity while donating 5% or less.
We came to this mission because we donate time to a free cancer retreat organization in Hawaii named "Kokolulu" and we'd love for you to learn more about them. While many organizations focus on the medical side of cancer, their charity focuses on the mental side of the cancer battle because a strong mind is a powerful tool to beat this disease beast! To help increase awareness and/or reminders to do self breast exams, we will soon create tees which become walking billboard reminders to do self breast exams and as a way to raise donations for Kokolulu. However, if you want 100% of your money to go to charity, please directly donate it to Kokolulu or another cancer charity. All of our lives have been touched by breast cancer and we must defeat it which takes the attention and kindness of people.
We’ve been asked how the name “Project Boobies” came about for breast cancer self exam awareness and breast cancer shirts to raise money for charity. For over 10 years, I worked for corporations that named innovative new product ideas and/or special new projects in “code” names so that we could somewhat freely speak about them in groups (yes that is very Dilbert like). For example, we might use Project Hercules as a code name for a strength product. While the name “Project Boobies” might seem somewhat ironic in that context because we want the world to know about our breast cancer efforts, we feel it is appropriate because of the uniquely high levels of donation we will make is totally different than how other companies have been doing business with charities. Please help us help others through donations, wearing the soon to be released clothes, or on social sites like Facebook or Twitter to remind your friends/family to be aware of changes to your body which might be an early indication of cancer. Breast cancer is a disease we need to “get our hands around” as soon as possible since someone is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes and someone dies in the US every 13 minutes.
As we developed the site, we wanted our logo to communicate a meaningful message by itself. The main focus of our logo is the "hands"; our 14 year old daughter's hands in our attempt to get across the point that it is never too early to begin paying attention to your body (she doesn't have cancer in case you wonder about that). Additionally, we think the logo will be provocative on cancer clothes to "grab" attention of people that see you wearing it. Remember, people get breast cancer, not just women, so it helps that everyone is reminded that self breast exams are an important part of their lives. While the number of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer if low, all men have mom’s or female loved ones that can be reminded to take care of themselves. Think about how many people you will see on an average day, especially on the weekends that you can remind to conduct self breast exams which could help someone catch breast cancer early, possibly even save their life.
Our family lives by a simple life philosophy to accept the unchangeable and change the unacceptable. To us, not catching breast cancer early when mammograms and self breast exams are readily available is clearly unacceptable. Remember, every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer and every 13 minutes someone dies. Since help is right there in your own hands for early detection, please grab a feel so cancer can't steal!
